Movie Chunk!

I’ve watched a good handful of movies lately and though I haven’t felt the need to do full reviews on any of them, I thought I’d give a quick overview of what I thought of them. So in no particular order:

Penelope–I loved Penelope!! This one will be a permanent part of my collection and one I’ll probably watch many more times. James McAvoy wasn’t so mushy throughout, but there was just enough to still make me feel very ready to swoon over him by the end. The characters were great and they really did a great job of still making it feel like a sort of fairy tale.

Dan in Real Life–This was disappointing. There were a small handful of entertaining moments, but overall, it left me annoyed with the characters and annoyed that I had just sat and wasted time watching it.

Enchanted–Definitely one to see! I didn’t find it quite as amazing as everyone else did, but I still thought it was great. They pulled off the story rather nicely and it was good to see something that hasn’t already been done 15 times, ya know?

Horton Hears a Who–I’m still on the fence with this one. There were some moments that really cracked me up, but otherwise, I had trouble keeping my attention on it. I’ll have to give this one another shot sometime and see if it was just that boring or if I was just too inattentive at the time.

Walk Hard–Horrible. Jenna’s performance was awesome though, and worth seeing if you’re a big fan of The Office (and also to spot how many other Dunderheads you can spot in the film) but otherwise it was just hard to watch. The making fun of things and shoving it in your face was just a little too blatant for me; I need a little more subtlety.

Remember Wednesday June 11th

Remember Wednesday is a weekly segment where I reminisce with a song (or songs) that always brings up a particular memory. I invite you all to do the same. For more details on how to play along, read here!

This week’s song is from Aerosmith. “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” always reminds me of my 7th grade year in school. It ranks as probably my favorite year of school. The grades were separated into “clusters” and I was in the cluster with the best teachers, and all my best friends. I had homeroom with everyone I loved to surround myself with! And my favorite teacher–Mr. Douglas. He treated us like adults, and we all loved him for it. Whenever an assembly or other event would be set to interrupt our day, Mr. D would often convince the other teachers to keep us all in homeroom all day instead of changing classes. One of those days we sat in and watched movies all day, lounging on the floor. Armageddon was among them, thus “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” taking me back to that time of my life.

Cheeseburger Hot Pockets

cheeseburg_160.jpg Last week I decided to branch out and try a few new Hot Pocket flavors. I don’t do this often since with microwave things like this, it’s really hit or miss.

I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable the Cheeseburger Hot Pockets were! To me, they tasted like a Krystal burger. That’s probably the best description I can give you to get an idea of whether or not you might enjoy them.

I was super-hungry so I went ahead and ate the second one as well. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much–I can’t say for sure whether it was because I wasn’t as hungry or because there seemed to be more chunks of onions in the second one (I have a thing about onions when they contrast so obviously against the texture of the rest of the meal). Either way it was still pretty good.

These won’t make it to my regular Hot Pocket buys, but I’ll definitely have them again. They’ve got my picky eater seal of approval.

Ohhhhh school dances! These first two gems were played at pretty much every dance I can ever remember going to. And the last one, well I just remember two of my most memorable dances were to this song the year it came out. How romantic….for 12-13 year old me ;)

Nilla Cakesters

nilla.JPG You may recall a few months back I gave Oreo Cakesters a try; sadly, they just didn’t do it for me! Within the last week or so, I caught a commercial advertising Nilla Cakesters. I had a feeling Nilla Wafers might fare better in this cake-like confection, and I was right!

I spotted them last night in our late-night sync cable excursion and snatched up a box. I think Heaven exploded in my mouth on the first bite! I’m strongly reminded of cupcakes while eating these–only, much batter cupcakes because the ratio of cake to icing is perfection!

I strongly recommend giving these a try! I love eating away the top layer, enjoying the cream filling, and then finishing off the final cookie/cake bit, but it’s just as tasty to eat the whole thing as-is! I’m torn as to which is the more satisfying method; you’ll have to try them for yourself and weigh-in!

Indiana Jones

Warning: I’m not attempting to keep this spoiler-free. While my opinions don’t include any outright spoilers, they allude heavily.

I enjoyed it. I’m glad I saw it in the theater rather than waiting for dvd. However, it didn’t live up to any of the hype surrounding an Indiana Jones film. At the risk of sounding like a really annoying teacher–I just expected more from it.

There wasn’t much in the way of being outright exciting. There were big parts that were just way too predictable.

I was actually really annoyed that they went the ‘alien’ route. What’s interesting about that? When you keep it as some ancient thing, there are boundaries and a challenge in pushing it to the limit without being just flat-out unbelievable. By going with extra terrestrials, they took all the fun out of it. Been there, seen that. You can make up whatever you want then and it’s just not nearly as entertaining. You lose pretty much any believability you had. [Not saying other lifeforms exist, but we don’t know, so therefore anything we use in movies is purely fiction and we know that.]

And if they make more with Shia as the star….I’ll boycott. No joke.

So as just any movie, it was enjoyable, but as Indiana Jones, it sort of failed…My two cents!

This week is all about first love ;) Appropriate since I had a dream about him two nights ago….unhappy dream…erm, he had died, lol–My bad–I don’t control my dreams!

My first love lived an hour away. He worked and took classes in town, which is how we met and how we generally spent time together.

One thing from our relationship that I always think of that just really fills my heart is the fact that he was always more than willing to spend 4 hours of his day driving to pick me up in Douglas, take me home with him to hang out and spend a few hours, then take me back home—I don’t remember him ever complaining.

It was first love–need/want to be around you 24 hours a day kind of love, so it’s fitting that our song was about being too far apart. So I give you Evan and Jaron’s, “The Distance

The Distance

Of course, that made George Strait’s “Run” come in a close second as ‘our song.’ To this day, when I listen to the song, Dallas gets replaced with Douglas….Can’t help it.

Chili’s

Tonight I made my third trip to Chili’s. Three trips and I’ve yet to fall in love with Chili’s the way everyone else does. In fact, everything I’ve ever eaten at Chili’s I’ve thought, “Restaurant X has this same thing, only better.”

I started out risky. I tried Cajun Chicken Pasta, which was a stretch for me, but it tasted horrible! I gave them that one since I was taking a chance in trying it. Last time we had an Awesome Blossom, which severely lacked Awesome :( And I also had a bacon cheeseburger that just fell flat….I was trying to stick to something simpler and give them a chance to impress me…no good! There was no flavor whatsoever to that burger. So disappointing.

Last night I went as restaurant-basic as I could think to get. We had their Skillet Queso for a Starter and well, that just made me want to go to Moe’s for decent queso. For my meal I had a sirloin and loaded mashed potatoes. I enjoyed the potatoes, they were yummy, but I’d have much rather had the white cheddar mashed potatoes from Ruby Tuesday. My steak…well I didn’t eat very much of that at all. On top of being cooked nowhere near the way I asked for it, it was flavorless and seemed like it had been marinated in water. There IS such a thing as too juicy!

I haven’t completely given up yet. I signed up for a $5 coupon, so I’ll try once more eventually. Anyone have any suggestions? I’m running out of ideas of what to try on that menu to finally be able to say I enjoyed Chili’s!
