Cover me

I had a surge in adding music this week and now I’m craving more. I found a few covers of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” that I really like, and We the Living do a really great cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

I’m a sucker for a good cover song! Punk covers are a guilty pleasure as well. So that’s where you come in. I’m looking to expand my cover song collection so I’m holding a contest for $10 sent directly to your PayPal account [or a gift card to the store of your choice, if you so prefer].

It’s pretty simple, leave a comment with some of your favorite cover songs–preferably ones I probably haven’t heard. Each song will count as one entry [10 max but feel free to send more!]

Furthermore, if you actually email the song to me at faded(dot)jadeline(@)gmail(dot)com, I’ll give you two entries each. [Max 10 songs on this as well]

If you blog about it and link to my tiny little contest, I’ll add another two entries. Leave a comment with a link to your blog entry.

Finally, for the three songs I enjoy the most [obviously to be decided by me] I’ll add 5 entries each.

All entries can be left in a single comment, or individual–your choice, just be sure they don’t run all together and confuse me ;)

Contest runs until November 2nd. Winner will be announced and notified by the 4th!

So that’s
1 entry per song [10 max]
2 entries per file you send [10 songs max for 20 entries]
2 entries for a quick blog with a link
5 entries for the three songs I deem best

So bring ‘em on! My ears are happily waiting!

Wow…this is a great contest idea. I am going to have to wrack my brain for a few days, as I am generally not a big fan of remakes. Any that I do come up with, though, I will send to you, so I get more bang for my buck :)

I’m not worried about the contest, but I have a Internet radio show at Mojo Radio Live called ‘Comedy, Concerts & Covers’ and I specialize in covers. Send me an email and I’ll reply with what I have and maybe we can do some exchanging.

Division Day an indie band did a cover of “Enjoy The Silence” by Depeche Mode. I uploaded the song to this page

The funniest cover I have ever head is “Bitches Ain’t Sh*t” by Ben Folds originally done by Dr. Dre. Really a must hear.

oh this contest could be real fun. I will take a day or two then give you a list. along with links no files though. I will aslo blog about the list and link to this site. Of course I wonder if the cover has to have been done by an artist signed with a label or if Indie artists count.

I emailed you 5-6 songs to download. Some of the covers I have in my mp3 collection.

I was going to suggest Hurt by Johnny Cash … not only is this an amazing cover, it’s unprecedented. A country music legend doing a hard rock cover? The video is amazing as well. Trent Reznor has been quoted saying the song isn’t his anymore. But alas, Lisa beat me to it.

Metallica’s Am I Evil is a cover song, originally done by Diamondhead.

Korn did a pretty good cover of Word Up.

  27. Jade said on October 28th, 2007 at 11:04 pm:

Thanks Kat, I got your files and they’ve been added to my playlist

  28. Jade said on October 28th, 2007 at 11:05 pm:

All submissions are welcome. Some of my longest-lasting favorite bands are people no one else has ever heard of.

Sid Vicious ( Sex Pistols ) covered Sinatra’s “My Way” and that cover, along with a few other covers ( You Need Hands, I believe, covered by Malcom ) on The Great Rock n’ Roll Swindle.

  30. Chuck Foxtrot said on November 1st, 2007 at 1:19 pm:

Elvis Costello covered Leon Payne’s “Psycho” (the same song was also covered by The Beasts of Bourbon, Hugh Cornwell and a few others, but Costello’s is considered by many to be the definitive version, surpassing Payne’s own rendition).

It’s about as far from punk as you can get, but it’s damn good nonetheless

I like Johnny Cash’s version of “Oh Lonesome Me” originally by Don Gibson, but also released by Tex Ritter, I believe.

  32. Craig Hansen said on November 2nd, 2007 at 12:36 pm:

OK, here’s some favorite covers by my favorite new artist of 2007, Brandi Carlile…

All are HARD to find recorded, she mostly does them live…

“Folsum Prison Blues” (originally Johnny Cash)
    “Hallelujah” (originally Leonard Cohen)
    “Bohemian Rhapsody” (originally Queen)

  33. Craig Hansen said on November 2nd, 2007 at 12:37 pm:

I have Cash’s Oh Lonesome Me, but the Carlile stuff I’ll have to search for.
