Remember Wednesday

50637-bk.JPGYou know those songs that every time you hear, you draw up a particular memory, or thoughts of a specific time in your life? Well I wanna hear about it!

Next week I’ll begin “Remember Wednesday.” Every Wednesday I’ll post a song and along with it, the memory it brings up for me. I invite you all to do the same and leave me a link in the comments!

The rules are simple:

  • Post a song–you can go as basic as posting a link to the lyrics, or go all out with a snippet, a download, a video–whatever you want! You can even post more than one if you’ve got more tied to the same memory.
  • Tell us what it always reminds you of–is it the lyrics, or was this song just part of your life during that time?
  • Link back to the weekly post (found here) so your readers can find other Remember Wednesday posts
  • Leave a comment here, with a link to your post, so we can all come read!

I’m not really sure how well this will catch on, but I’m going to continue it regardless of the amount of participation I get. It’s something I wanted to do on my own in the first place and just decided it’d be fun to turn it into a weekly thing with other bloggers. I hope you’ll join me!

Strawberry Carmex

carmex.jpg Best. Stuff. Ever.

Carmex has done it again! About two months ago, while browsing for a new lip balm, what do I spy but another Carmex flavor–this time–Strawberry! You may remember me talking about Cherry, their first attempt at flavoring Carmex. Now they’ve really got it down! Where Cherry still had a Carmex after-taste and a medicinal sting to it, Strawberry welcomes no shortcomings! It’s just amazing! I’m in love with the stuff. I haven’t left the house yet without having it handily in my pocket!

Vanilla Coke

vanillacoke1.jpg This is one of those posts where I don’t have any real ‘review’ type things to say…I just wanna gush about how much I love Vanilla Coke.

I remember last March when Ryan, his mom and I all went to the Coke Pavilion I was so excited to drink Vanilla Coke again in the sampling area. You can’t imagine my excitement when I saw it back on the shelves just a few months later! It’s been back for about a year now, actually, and at least once a month I have to grab a case for my fridge. No one ever gets any of my Vanilla Coke. I’m absolutely stingy about it. I need to research and see if I can find it in a glass bottle…I bet that’d be sex in a bottle.

LitterMaid

littermaid.jpg Not long after I moved to Valdosta, I went out and invested a little under $100 on a LitterMaid self-cleaning unit. It’s one of the best household purchases I’ve ever made.

Inside the box is a small sensor that detects when your cat is there. Ten minutes after your cat exits (it gives kitty plenty of time to get away) a row of tines slides through to sift the litter and drop anything into the receptacle at the end.

I love this thing. It takes very little to get used to the small bit of noise it makes when sifting through the litter. The receptacles keep the air fresh since any waste is basically sealed inside.

It was a great investment up front and only a small expense to upkeep. There are 12 waste receptacles in a box and I usually pick up a box for under $13. And you can extend their use by simply emptying the receptacles rather than throwing them out.

I wouldn’t trade my LitterMaid for anything. I don’t think you could pay me to go back to a regular box.

“Diary” Chuck Palahniuk

diary.jpg “Misty Wilmont has had it. Once a promising young artist, she’s drinking too much and working as a waitress in a hotel. Her husband, a contractor, is in a coma after a suicide attempt, and his clients are threatening Misty with lawsuits over a series of vile messages they’ve discovered on the walls of houses he remodeled.

Suddenly, Misty’s artistic talent returns. Inspired but confused by a burst of creativity, she soon finds herself a pawn in a larger conspiracy that threatens to cost hundreds of lives. What unfolds is a dark, hilarious story from America’s most inventive nihilist, and Palahniuk’s most impressive work to date.”

I love Chuck. I’ve been enthralled by his stories since the first time I read his short story, “Guts.” I’ve haven’t read everything he’s written, but I’ve read a solid handful and always been satisfied.

This was not one of those times. At most, I can call Diary interesting.

The story sort of drags on in a way that, if the ending had been satisfactory, could’ve made it all worth it. I read it all in two sittings. It wasn’t the kind of reading I couldn’t put down because I was enjoying it so much; I couldn’t put it down because I was intrigued by where it would lead. When it came down to it, it just ended up being exactly what you’d already figured out. Completely unsatisfying.

For me, there were too many things left up in the air as completely random. I can handle unexplained, but not when it comes to things that just felt out of nowhere in the first place. The biggest one for me was her daughter–her state of mind and her actions–there was never any explanation as to what put her there, and I think she was too young to have gotten that way on her own.

If you’ve never read Chuck or are just getting into him, I wouldn’t recommend Diary. I’m glad I read it. The story was interesting, but I know it’s definitely affected my desire to grab another Chuck book off my shelf. (I own a few I haven’t read yet.)

I’d love to hear other opinions if anyone disagrees. I’m more than happy to hear that I’ve overlooked something that would make it all make more sense to me and thus be more enjoyable.
