Becoming Jane

becoming_jane_ver5.jpg“Their love story was her greatest inspiration”

Oh what a fantastic story! This may not be a ‘great’ movie, but the story is just incredible! I was so compelled! I found myself smiling at the story more often than not.

Becoming Jane is the story of Jane Austen’s early life and possible romance with Thomas Langlois Lefroy–based on true events, and expounding upon the possibility of the great romance that inspired Austen’s writings.

Having been so recently enthralled with adaptations of Pride & Prejudice, I was delighted to see such moments in her own life which could’ve inspired events in her writing.

I’m extremely curious now, to discover which bits are actually confirmed events, which are easily assumable, and which are purely speculation.

This has definitely cemented my desire to read the works of Jane Austen. Thank goodness I get paid this week–I need to make a trip to BooksAMillion!

Edit: I was reading bits of reviews on Amazon and this line about James McAvoy, who plays Tom Lefroy, really caught me. “…he makes us feel the panic of a man about to lose his reason for breathing.” <—That’s the kind of passion you feel throughout the film once this story gets underway.

I’ll be a bitch because I can

When I say I knew who John Mayer was waaaay before you did, I mean it. I fell in love with ‘Comfortable’ forever and a day ago. I remember humming ‘No Such Thing’ and no one having a clue what it was.

I took a hiatus from John. I had to. In my eyes, he sold out. Once MTV caught wind of him, he re-did a lot of the music I already loved and gave them a more poppy, more marketable sound. He escalated into this arrogant ass…and started making more marketable crap. ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’? Really John? ‘Daughters’? What the hell was all that? Just wasn’t John Mayer music to me.

I continued listening to my favorites–the good stuff. ‘My Stupid Mouth,’ ‘Man on the Side,’ ‘Comfortable,’ now those are good damn songs.

My hiatus ended when Continuum was released. It’s just good music. It’s the kind of stuff that will carry over to the next generation.

It’s hard not to hear his cockiness carry over into his music these days, too, but maybe that’s just me.

I still don’t like John Mayer, but I like his music–the new, and the old, but not that crap in the middle…that non-music.

[No offense if anyone likes that stuff, I might not hate it all so vehemently if it had come out in a different way or at a different time.]

Heroes Oct 8th

Just some random, scattered thoughts–

My heart aches for Hiro! That poor kid just can’t fall in love with someone who’s available to him, can he?!

Flyboy was SO cute when he told Claire to shut up. His face was just adorable! I loved it! It’ll be interesting to see how things play out when he finds out who Claire’s father is.

I’m so sick of shows/movies involving people with special abilities trying to convince themselves, or children that they can be ‘normal’ and never use their powers. [Nikki] bullshit! Life’s tough! You think you’re really never gonna be tempted to use your powers to make your life easier?! I don’t think I’d ever consider not using my powers. It wouldn’t be a question.

I’m sick of the McSpanish twins. Honestly, that storyline just isn’t interesting to me at all. Maybe they’ll take off, but they’re really pushing it.

I dunno what they did with Peter’s tattoo….I’m hoping that’ll be explained one day and not just left hanging.

They’re really twisting things up quite nicely this season. I wasn’t really sure how they were gonna make new storylines with all these existing characters, but they’ve done a great job. As long as they manage to play everything out logically again, as with last season, I’ll be perfectly pleased =)

I think there was something else I wanted to comment on, but I can’t remember it right now. Hmmm.

Pride & Prejudice vs Pride and Prejudice

Okay I’ve done it! I’ve finally finished watching Pride & Prejudice, the miniseries! What a feat! I watched the 2006 movie (starring Keira Knightly) earlier this summer, so I was determined to see the miniseries (Colin Firth).

When looking up information on the two, I’ve seen an overabundance of “this one’s better than this one.” I set out to decide for myself.

I found it hard to see where people compare the two. Of course I have a preference for which I’d rather watch, but I’d dare not call one better than the other. Though they convey the same story, they’re just so different in their presentation. There are small similarities, but not enough to convince myself they’re similar enough to truly compare.

After all, you’re comparing almost 6 hours to 2, and well, it’s just not the same.

The miniseries, in it’s length offered much more character development. It gave a very clear, linear paths to each event.

The DVD offers more intensity. Things aren’t spelled out for you, but the emotion carries you.

I much prefer the intensity of the DVD, but it was very enjoyable to see the scenes playing out in the miniseries that you were imagining during the DVD.

My only complaints with the miniseries were that the actresses playing the daughters just looked too old for the parts they were playing. I wasn’t very fond of the final scenes either. The way they set up the end in the miniseries was just very anticlimactic. I could’ve done without seeing Lydia’s scenes play out, but I think that’s because I’m partial against Lydia. Her character already annoys me so seeing her being so oblivious to her situation and her future just made me more annoyed with her.

I wish the DVD had more characterization of Mary, the undesirable sister. Of course they make her look a little plain, but she has very few sour comments compared to the character in the miniseries. They did a much better job with her in the miniseries.

So again, I say it’s hard to even compare them as if they’re the same movie. I’d say if you’re in the mood for an intense romance, go for the DVD. If you’re prepared to take the time to watch the romance slowly develop, in a different, but equally pleasing way, go for the miniseries.

Watch them both at some point, though.
